Going ashore in Rotterdam, Holland

Rotterdam is the biggest and busiest port in Europe and one of the largest in the world. For this reason, going out for a visit into the city can be very difficult and time consuming, but nevertheless very pleasant and relaxing.

Inside the port, walking is not permitted and a shuttle bus service may be available in some terminals (free of charge). If the shuttle bus is not available, seamen can take a ride in one of the many minivans available for the workers and get to the gate in ~15-20 minutes.

Once you arrive at the gate, there are two options to go into the center. The first and most expensive is by taxi. It can take you ~ 40 minutes to get to the city center and the taxi fare must not exceed 50 Euros. If you travel alone, this can be quite a lot of money, but if you share the taxi with some 3-4 persons, then it can worth its while.

If you travel alone and want to spend only a small amount of money on transportation you have another option, which can prove to be very reliable and cheap. Only five minute walk from the port gate, there is a bus station with buses going to the city every 30 minutes. There is also a time schedule available in the station, so you also can try to remember some departure hours for your next visit, taking into account the fact that buses in Holland always come on time. The bus ticket costs 3 Euros and you can buy it from the bus driver. It is valid for one hour on all public transportation. After ~ 25 minutes, you will have to change your bus in Sudplein Station and take the metro for another 15 minutes to continue your journey to the center.

Do not forget to validate your ticket as soon as you get into the bus, but also before getting off. Otherwise, you will not be able to use the same ticket to enter the metro Station.

If you have more time available, you can take the metro and go to Amsterdam or Hague. If not, a 3-4 hour walk in the center of Rotterdam can be exactly what you need to relax and recharge your batteries or just to enjoy the sightseeing as a regular tourist.

All the center area of the city is well famous for shopping, but you can also find here some very nice restaurants and bars to enjoy a decent meal or just a drink.

When you arrive in Sudplein Station, be sure to check the schedule for the returning bus to the port. These busses come at different hours throughout the day, at shorter intervals up to 7 p.m, but at very long intervals after that time (every 30 minutes after 7 p.m and once per hour between 21 and 23 when it is the last one).

Back  in the port, kindly ask the officers from the gate to call the shuttle bus/ workers’ bus for you to get back to your ship.
