Patagonia ( March – August 2012)
Patagonia is a region of Southern Argentina that occupies the East part of the Andes Mountains and South of Colorado River. In this area there are some small ports where port container vessels can dock and the most important ones are: San Antonio Este, Puerto Madryn, Puerto Deseado, Puerto Santa Cruz, Puerto San Julian, Ushuaia.
Going ashore in Puerto Madryn, Argentina
Puerto Madryn is situated in Golfo Nuevo which belongs to the Province of Chubut, Argentina, only few km away from the Valdes Peninsula. Almost 15 years ago, all the area including the Valdes Peninsula and the small islands around it, were declared UNESCO heritage and became an important tourist destination for nature and animal lovers from all over the world.
Going ashore in Puerto Deseado, Argentina
Puerto Deseado belongs to South Patagonia and it is located in the Province of Santa Cruz, Argentina, where the waters of Deseado River flow into the South Atlantic Ocean. It is a small port in a very beautiful area that was explored by the greatest naturalists and explorers of the world starting with the XVIth century – including Sir Francisc Drake, Charles Darwin and Thomas Cavendish, whose ship, named Desire, gave the name of the territory.
Going ashore in San Antonio Este, Argentina
The small port of San Antonio Este is situated in the Gulf of San Matias, very close to the northern limit of Patagonia and belongs to the Province of Rio Negro, Argentina. It is one of the smallest ports you will ever see and it can accommodate only one vessel at a time (and few small fishing vessels). The port lacks shore cranes and for this reason unloading and loading of the vessel are operated with vessel’s cranes – which can take a longer time than in the case of big port gantries.
