Can you go anywhere around the vessel?

A voyage on a port container vessel offers you a lot more freedom than one on a cruiser and this can be one of the main reasons for which you chose this kind of travelling. You can go almost anywhere you want around the vessel – as long as you do not interfere with the crew’s work – and the most important thing that you have to take into account is your own safety.

In your first day on board, one of the officers will familiarize you with the vessel, the safety equipment and he will tell you where you can go alone on the vessel. You can ask him everything you want to know about the places you can visit – alone or accompanied – the times and schedules. If you have any doubt, you can always ask the duty officers whatever questions you have in mind in the following days.

While on board a port container vessel you can spend as much time as you want in the common areas like Messroom and Recreation Room.

You can visit the bridge during passage ways and spend a few hours watching the duty officers doing their jobs, admiring the surroundings from the top level of the vessel or even reading a book on the couch/ chair. During arrival and departure you can also stay on the bridge and on the outside wings, being careful not to disturb the people working.

Walking on the deck is permitted during passage ways, but never during port stay, due to safety reasons. If weather is nice you can have long walks on deck – forward and aft – and spend as much time as you want in the open air. Always inform the officer on duty about your intention to go outside and always report to the bridge as soon as you come back. This is a matter of safety and you need to be sure that somebody knows where you are at any time – in order to be safe.

If weather is not nice and waves are bigger than 3-4 meters, going outside can be prohibited. You can always check the weather and find out everything you need to know in advance.

If you are interested in seeing the big engine underneath, you can always arrange a visit with one of the officers from the Engine Department. You are not allowed to walk around alone the Engine Room and always need somebody to accompany you there.

Visiting the Engine Room

If you go outside, walking on deck, or visit the Engine Room, be sure to wear some non slippery shoes – some kind of trekking shoes – in order to move around in safety conditions.

You are never allowed to stay anywhere close to the forward nor aft station during maneuverings.

While vessel is alongside, you are allowed to go ashore for a walk in the city, but always have to be back 2 hours before departure.

Mostly these are the rules you have to take into consideration while onboard a port container vessel. As different ship requires different regulations, you may find some new rules on a different ship. Always ask permission to do something, but think it through before. You have to know better what safety means to you and better impose some other safety rules on yourself in order to avoid any problems which can ruin your trip.

Be safe and have fun!
